Direct Sales Leadership, Adorable Puppies, & the Complexity of Stairs

leadership

Leadership. It is actually my favorite part of my Passion Parties Business.  I adore helping other women reach their goals. See, helping others is kind of my thing. Before I began my direct sales journey I was in Social Work. Helping others has always been a passion of mine. I’ve always been the go to person in my neighborhood. Need help with something, call Erica she’ll tell you where to go. Now that I am a leader I can find no greater joy than to watch my team learn, grow, and expand their horizons.

I found this adorable video online and it immediately made me think of leadership. I remember watching it and thinking “This is what leadership means to me”. In this video there is a small Golden Retriever Puppy named Daisy. Daisy is in a predicament  She is faced with a new challenge, walking down stairs. Her owner is at the bottom of the staircase videoing the event and cheering her on. Despite her constant reassurances it is only when Simon, an older pup shows her repeatedly how to do it that she lets  go of her fear and tackles the challenge.

Here’s the Video

Now here is how this relates to Direct Sales Leadership.

OK! You signed a new recruit! Rock On! Good J0b! Now your new team member is rockin’ along and she’s super excited about her business and that she was smart enough to join. She’s telling everyone who has a pulse about her business because she is about to BURST from all the excitement. She hits her first month of Fast Track, an incentive program offered by Passion Parties to get our consultants off to a FANTASTIC Start, She may even hit month 2, ROCK ON! Your feeling pretty good and she is feeling AMAZING! Now here is comes -The Dreaded  MONTH 3 – Now he has to take the leap of faith and join the ranks of Direct Sales Leaders to get her Month 3 Reward! Suddenly she finds herself looking down this steep staircase and she is full of self doubt. It’s scary! Maybe she has been through her entire circle of friends  and family members and is looking at a blank calendar and is starting to question if this was something she should have done at all.

Enter Direct Sales Leader (bigger pup) You show her how she is going to accomplish this huge task, and she looks at you like “Yeah right! Of course you can do it! You’ve been doing this forever, you have more contacts than me”! Yada, Yada, Yada…  So as the leader you remind her of her Why. Why she wants her own business and she takes a step. Now your thinking “Awesome”! But then she has a cancellation or a hostess isn’t responding to her etc. So now she takes like 5 steps back and is feeling defeated.

Enter the leader, yet again, and shows her look you can’t give up. Watch me again, and we’ll figure out where the disconnect is. So the leader gets her back to edge again. We may do this song and dance countless times and then one day, you start seeing progress, baby steps, and then before you know it they are high stepping down those once scary stairs!  I can tell you as a leader it is super rewarding.

So next time you find yourself cornered by a flight super scary stairs, remember that even adorable puppies sometimes need a mentor, and sometimes it takes a lot of practice and reassurance before your ready to tackle those stairs, but they can be defeated. You can win!

  1. Hi Erica, you are so right about having a mentor, no matter what stage we are in our business life we all need a mentor, who is just that one step ahead of us all the time. Many thanks for a wonderful article

How adorable! I love how you integrated such a cute little video into your post. It’s true, sometimes we need to trust in our more experienced leaders, and the leaders need to remember what it feels like to be brand new. Cute post with a good message!

It’s so true! Even now I still contact my leader with my quirky ideas and look to her for advice.

I loved this video. I especially like the part where she is watching him go up and down as if to say ” Well of course you can do it, your BIGGER than me!” It’s so true! It’s like saying You’ve been in business for years, or your customers make more money than mine, etc..

  5. Hi Erica,
I love this puppy/stair analogy – it’s the kind of thing I like to spot and write about to relay my goal achievement messages. The cuteness helps too!
    Cheers,
